Released around the same time as the movie from Blue Sky, Ferdinand Unstoppabull is a movie tie-in in an era where movie tie-ins can almost only exist on mobile phones. There used to be a time where licensed games would be put onto shelves along with all of the big hitters of the video game market. You could be seeing a Spongebob game on the shelf, paired up with Assassin’s Creed at retail.
Alas, with mobile markets growing as strongly and with no signs of slowing down, it is essentially made easier for companies to capitalize on it by making games cheaper. Because the constraints that come with licensed video games are absent here, it’s easier and more efficient to target the mobile market.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as far as games like Ferdinand Unstoppabull are of concern. After all, mobile games are able to be made simpler than their console counterparts. This means games could be more arcade-like and simple to grasp in comparison. With less of a budget to blow on a big game, they have time to work things out in littler increments.
So what does this mean for the resulting mobile games? Well, this allows these games to be more fun. The way Ferdinand Unstoppabull handles things is fine on its own. The game doesn’t follow its own random structure per se. Rather, it does it take advantage of a formula that is already proven to work. What is that formula you may ask? Why, it is none other than that of Candy Crush.
After all, Candy Crush has shown to be a massive success across all accounts of the mobile market. With its Bejeweled-style match three gameplay, it is nothing more than a force to be reckoned with. Naturally, loads of other games have followed up on this success, including Ferdinand Unstoppabull. It isn’t the first of its kind, and it won’t be the last. But it won’t matter.
Why? Because, what matters about Ferdinand Unstoppabull is that it manages to do it in a fashion that works well within its design. The puzzle mechanics are as enjoyable as they have ever been in this kind of game. It’s always incredibly satisfying to link together three of the same color and change up the game field. It’s great that the game was able to capture the fun of doing so.
If you are a fan of the movie, Ferdinand Unstoppabull may be a real treat for you. Heck, even if you haven’t seen the thing yet, anyone that has played Candy Crush should be more than happy to play a fellow successor. You know what they say: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Ferdinand Unstoppabull is a game that plays by the rules, but in a way that could only prove to please the audience it aims to win over. Do give this one a shot and happy color popping!
