Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice: Game review

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a video game developed and distributed by Ninja Theory, creators of, among others, Heavenly Sword or Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. It is an action and adventure title that mixes various genres such as hack & slash, psychological terror, puzzles and even walking simulator. During this story, we will embody Senua, whose mission is to reach Hela, the goddess of death, to negotiate with her and bring her late beloved, Dillion to life.

The only achievement / losing trophy is “Tales of the North”, consisting of finding and activating all the lore runes of the game. The rest of them are unlocked automatically by reaching certain milestones in history that would be the end of each chapter. Since there is no level selector, we have decided to make a complete video guide of the game in which you will see how we solve all the puzzles, find all the lorestones, and eliminate all the enemies.

Senua’s story

The protagonist of the game, as we mentioned before, is a young Scottish warrior who addresses Helheim, the realm of the dead according to Norse mythology. However, you can forget all the archetypes; it is true that when he wields the sword he is able to face his enemies (some Vikings are great and menacing) but Senua is also a fragile character, marked by loss, with which it is easy to identify (in this sense she has reminded us of Aloy, the protagonist of Horizon Zero Dawn).

The mechanics with which we cross are the most varied. There are combats, which rely on a combination of attacks, stops, and feints (although they are not very complicated). We also encounter final enemies that require different strategies, very varied puzzles (some play with perspective and others are solved with the help of our inner voices) and of course, there is an exploration in a dark and cold world, which keeps the unmistakable style artistic of the other Ninja Theory games.

And speaking of artistic style, Helheim is a very particular environment. The Unreal Engine 4 engine does its best to make us feel in the middle of Ragnarok (the end of the world in Viking mythology). Desaturated colors and high contrast work great with weather, fire, and fog. But what most impacts is the design of some areas, oppressive and decadent, with details that make the hair stand on end. We can see how any of these scenarios are transformed before our eyes (or at the head of our protagonist, at least). We anticipate that it is one of those games that we will also enjoy in photo mode. how to recover deleted files ipad

And it is also appreciated that there is no interface on the screen while we play, and that all the information we receive is through game elements.
