3 Order Types: Market, Limit and Stop Orders

These orders follow the market and automatically change the stop price level according to market movements. You can set a particular price distance the market must reverse for you to be stopped out. In the case of a sell stop order, a trader would specify a stop price to sell.

It is also possible to set sell stop orders, if you trade on the go, via your Android or iOS phone, and these orders have the same features of the sell stop orders of the MetaTrader Desktop version. To place a sell stop order on MetaTrader Mobile, open the order terminal by touching the top right symbol that looks like a page with a “+”. The first order type that appears is the “Market Execution”, and by touching it MT4 mobile will display the four pending order types, including the sell stop order.

Stop orders come in a few different variations, but they are all effectively conditional based on a price that is not yet available in the market when the order is originally placed. When the future price is available, a stop order will be triggered, but depending on its type, the broker will execute them differently. For example, if you want to buy an $80 stock at $79 per share, then your limit order can be seen by the market and filled when sellers are willing to meet that price. A stop order will not be seen by the market and will only be triggered when the stop price has been met or exceeded. In fast-moving and consolidating markets, some traders will use options as an alternative to stop loss orders to allow better control over their exit points. For example, let’s say you’re long (you own it) stock XYZ at $27 and believe that it has the potential to reach $35.

  1. Most trading platforms only allow a stop order to be initiated if the stop price is below the current market price for a sale and above the current market price for a buy.
  2. A limit order sets a specified price for an order and executes the trade at that price.
  3. Because you’ve placed a stop order, you’ve taken a precautionary measure that can limit your losses or prevent them entirely.
  4. In this case, we will recommend a sell stop order with an adequate, protective, stop-loss to protect the order against any unforeseen or sharp price retracements.

The key factor here is that if you have a market position, you need to have a live stop-loss order to protect your investment/position. A financial stop-loss is placed at a point where you are no longer willing to accept further financial loss. For example, let’s say you’re only willing to risk $5 on a stock that’s currently trading at $75. That means you’ve chosen a financial stop of $5 per share (or $70 as the stop price), regardless of whatever else may be happening in the market.

Stop Orders: Mastering Order Types

But there’s also a risk of the stock falling so quickly that the stop is triggered, but the limit order is never filled because the stock has fallen below the limit price. Sell-stop orders use a mechanism that’s akin to buy-stop orders, which are used to purchase an investment when it rises to a predetermined level. Investors often use these when they think an investment will continue to appreciate, and the buy-stop order is used in an attempt to get in early when prices are moving higher. Buy-stop orders can also work to limit losses when selling stock short, a strategy intended to profit from a falling share price.

The key differences in buy limit and sell stop orders are based on the order type. Understanding these orders requires understanding the differences in a limit order vs. a stop order. A limit order sets a specified price for an order and executes the trade at that price. Most trading platforms only allow a stop order to be initiated if the stop price is below the current market price for a sale and above the current market price for a buy.

You can select the lot size, set the sell stop price, set or not a stop-loss and take-profit level and the order expiration. When you’re ready and if you have set a correct sell stop price, touch the, now unblocked, “Place” button at the bottom of the screen. Various Registered Investment Company products (“Third Party Funds”) offered by third party fund families and investment companies are made available on the platform. Using margin, a trader would still simply place a buy limit order for the price in which they seek to buy. Investors generally use limit orders when they have a target entry or exit price and are willing to wait for the market to move in their favor. The lack of restriction on price means this order type has the best chance what is volume in cryptocurrency of being filled, but it also has the risk of being filled at a different price. If prices are changing rapidly, the next available price could be different than the price quoted when you initially placed the order. Investors who use market orders tend to be more concerned about the speed of a trade than the price.

Limit Orders

Your order will activate, and you could be out of the trade at $60, far below your stop price of $70. A limit order is an order to buy or sell a certain security for a specific price. One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot set a plain limit order to buy a stock above the market price because a better price is already available. So if you wanted to purchase shares of a $100 stock at $100 or less, you can set a limit order that won’t be filled unless the price that you specified becomes available. Both buy and sell limit orders allow a trader to specify their own price rather than taking the market price at the time the order is placed. Using a limit order for a buy allows a trader to specify the exact price they want to buy shares at.

There are more advantages to using stop orders than disadvantages because they can help you avoid or minimize your losses if the market doesn’t act in your favor. This is because you have an execution guarantee, where the order you placed will execute whether you’re monitoring prices or not. Advanced traders typically use trade order entries beyond just the basic buy and sell market order. Imagine that instead of falling, ABC is trading at $60 a year later. The investor decides they’d like to make sure they’ll see at least a small profit on this investment and places a $55 sell-stop order.

However, at price levels below $25, your strategy is invalidated, and you want to get out. You would then place a stop order to sell XYZ at around $25, or slightly lower, to account for a margin of error. Learn all about how stop-loss orders can help investors achieve a variety of goals by setting floor and ceiling prices that can limit a loss or lock in a profit. When the stock reaches the activation price, the order is executed according to its order type. If the stock never reaches the limit price, the order would never be filled. If the stock does drop to $50 or below, with enough volume available at that price, the order will fill, and the investor will buy the stock for $50 or less.

Sell-stop orders give investors a way to limit losses or take a profit by setting a price below market levels at which their investment will be sold. They’re how to sort an array of objects by property in javascript useful for investors who can’t constantly watch markets, or don’t want to. They can allow an investor to make a plan instead of panic selling in the moment.

The investor wants to protect profits and places a trailing stop order to sell with a trailing stop price $2 below the current price. ABC then gains $5 to $75, which changes the trailing stop price to $73. The next day, ABC falls $1, but the trailing stop price stays at $73. The investor’s ABC holdings will be sold if shares fall to or below $73. If the investor uses a stop-limit order, when the stock falls to the stop price, it’ll trigger an order that seeks to fill at the limit price or better. A potential benefit is being able to control what price the stock is sold at.

Each brokerage trading platform will have its own offering of trade order options so it is important to understand the options available in each system. Sell stop orders are a great tool for traders trading breakouts on bearish trends. Sell stop orders are also a viable option for traders using a support/resistance strategy, by placing a pending order, triggered after the break of a strong support level during a downtrend. With a buy limit order, the brokerage platform will buy the stock at the specified price or a lower price if it arises in the market.

A stop-loss order’s execution may not be at the exact price you specified. For example, say you had a stop-loss entry price of $32.25, but it was executed at $32.28, or $0.03 higher than you specified. That difference of $0.03 is called slippage, which is caused by many factors, such as lack of liquidity, volatility, and price gaps in news or data. In this case, you could place a stop-entry order above the current range high of $32—say at $32.25 to allow for a margin of error—to get you into the market once the sideways range is broken to the upside. Now that you’re long, and if you’re a disciplined trader, you’ll want to immediately establish a regular stop-loss sell order to limit your losses in case the break higher is a false one. When the stock is owned by the trader, a sell stop is usually used to limit losses or manage already accumulated profits.
