Ornella Muti is normally a superb choice to play Francesca, her experience and work bringing an added layer of power to the persona. She is also a fine actress, providing a strong overall performance in an understated role.

Her daddy, a tormented man who will be not ashamed of his daughter’s beauty, is known as a solid performer as well. The way in which he reacts to Vito’s first demands, his rage, holes and invective, is heart-breaking.

He’s gradually able to receive Vito to agree to a trial where the court will have to determine her fate. But the trial isn’t quite what he previously in mind.

As it happens that Vito and his good friends have a plan. They need to extort funds and advantages from Francesca in return for her hand in marriage. They must even eliminate her whenever they have to.

But Francesca, who also doesn’t find it that way, will not give in. The woman doesn’t need to become a slave. She doesn’t want to live in a world just where her beauty has no value.

This is a hard-hitting film that is a good protest against a desmazalado tradition.
